Weekly Blog 2-23-10

Dr. Thomas Ho had a bright Idea on a good topic. "you ought to do a post on how the carriers' services would allow you to make better use of social media..." so i will.

I wonder how the world as a whole used places like Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, Blogs and other social media? lets see!

With social media, we can connect, we can talk, communicate, socialize, and we can also provide information to those who desire to learn. in certain situations it may be the only way for a person to let the world know of a current event if their normal means of communication have been severed or squandered by a governing body or another, as we learned about in class.

I use social media to learn about topics i love, like Cisco, fiber optics, VOIP, Cloud Computing, VMWare, security, and many more!

so me personally can now with the use of social media look at and monitor new and upcoming news and current events

to be continued...

Sorry for the delay. I got cut off mid stream and had to hit publish so I could Leave to pickup my girlfriend from work before class. another side note IUPUI's wireless was down when I was at school yesterday so this is why I am continuing this now.

back on topic! => I can read about new and upcoming topics on the newest and latest and greatest things that are going to be developed and pushed into production. this gives me a unique advantage over others who use snail mail subscriptions like magazines, because even though magazines are good, they are already outdated by the time they are printed. and it takes about one week to a month to normally arrive. this is where social media can get you going. you can look and see instantly anywhere in the world about a topic that interests you and then join in a conversation to give your input.

Dr Thomas Ho said I should Narrow my Wide Field of Study on my course project down to a more specialized topic. and I do agree I was way out there, but I have always thought and dreamed Big. so as I stare at my Multi-Monitor setup I ponder.

He suggested "How about a CRITIQUE or analysis of the US National Broadband Plan by comparing to Singapore's iN2015?" this does seem like a very neat topic to look into because on the back end it still has to deal with all the topics I originally concerned myself. Here is what I originally Proposed:
***************************************************************************

CIT 49900 -Jacob Neitling

*Statement of requirements

how to make the USA connectivity better and more efficient

fiber optics

why this would make for a better USA and a better business model.

*implementation

existing lines

future growth

*compare two countries

USA ~ Japan /Singapore ?

*universal service

-restriction of access

-net neutrality

Internet 2 infrastructure

*underwater cables

-ownership *why have an owner? does it hurt or help)

-implication of global outage

*cloud computing infrastructure

-intellectual property law

-where the data is located?

-analyze countries vulnerability

o Deliverables

-power point

-written report

-charts tables and pictures

* References and other resources you will need to fulfill

-websites

-books

-people over seas

-people in the USA

-companies I interview

***************************************************************************

So after thinking about what I said I wanted to do and research and what Dr. Thomas Ho said, I agree National Broad Band is the way to go. It would appear this is a topic that can encapsulate many of the things I want to research. Alas, I need to Trim my proposal down and Harden it up to make it more compact and More precise. So lets take a look at some main points. the first point how to make the USA connectivity better and more efficient fiber optics, and why this would make for a better USA and a better business model.

really this should not be needed in the broad Band plan, even though on the back side it does deal with infrastructure I need not concern myself very in-depth about the physical architecture, i need to focus on how it will be delivered, and methods of delivery.

lets re write this as

how the USA Broad band plan compares to Singapore's. and how would they marked it to the public fairly?

this is a good start. next is future growth and i feel this is a needed topic to determine how it will be affected when the number of users jump from lets say 100,000 to 10,000,000. can the current infrastructure handle this traffic and still deliver what was originally promised in the proposal?

next we can compare two countries which would be USA and Singapore. Still using the Universal service and even restriction of access, and even better yet see if they have the right to filter information in and out of the countries like china does? also look into net neutrality and see how that would affect international laws?

I will completely omit the underwater cables part but I may still at lest mention it in the Infrastructure of the National broad Band proposal. how else do we communicated to another countries?

and just because I really want to I will still include the cloud and incorporate it into the Broad band plan. such as intellectual property law, where is your data located, and vulnerabilities as a countries? because broad band is a wireless technology, who is to say that on the border of the us and Canada that someone cannot use the Broad Band we have setup? look at other borders also? can this pose an issue maybe?

well this in a nutshell will be my rough new proposal now to Iron out the final details

Weekly Blog 2-16-10

this week has been a mess for me. there was so much going on i have not had a moment to breathe. first and foremost. i had to call ATT for my home internet connection and find out why the heck our internet was crap and so slow. then i asked about upgrading to U-Verse. not only for research for this class but so i could better enjoy the world through fiber optic connection XD. well long story short i was lied to on the phone *go figure* it would cost the same per month to have a 12 MB down and 3 MB up elite package for $75 but id have to pay 250 for install fees up front. i was like yea right. so I'm stuck on lame DSL ("darn" slow local-access) with 1 MB up and .3 MB down. speedtest.net confirms my wonderful connection. joy....

Next battle royal and epic endeavor was with Verizon. What a roller coaster, strap in for this one ladies and gentleman. so again more lies. and more social publicity junk. as you may know I wanted to get a droid so I could be more mobile with my computing and communication and also be more up to date with the way of the smart phone. Well according to Verizon. Neither me or anyone in my family plan can upgrade our phones until may 2011 without purchasing the phones outright for full retail value. Have you ever read the fine print for a phone without a contract? for the droid that is well over $500. This is SILLY! and to make it better I found out if I were to try to cancel my plan I would owe about the same as that, roughly $130 per each line and there are 4 lines. so I am basically stuck where I am not able to be very productive on the go.... Car computer here I come. I already have the core components the PSU, motherboard, ram , processor. I just need to make a case to fit in my car.

Ok now that I have vented back to CIT 49900:

this week, what you learned in class, well we talked more abot the proposal, and to be honest i though i would be well on my way with my smart phone talking about the joys of how we can be interconnected with fiber optics and all sorts of other neat things. but alas thoes plans fell through. the social media experiences for the week involved the above statments from ATT and Verizon. Some other really sad things were that my experiences with IT infrastructure products & services were hampered when my server i ordered a DL585 g1 with 8 cores and 16 gb of RAM came in from FED EX and was banged up bad. I will have to do an insurance clam on the product. that will be long and drawn out lucky me. for my progress on your course project, I am still getting all the details on the spisifics of the project together It is cruch time because I know my Professor wants it to him sooner than later.

weekly blog 2-4-10

* what you learned in class
this week we continued to learn more about the telco and

cableco structure and implementation. we discussed various types of

phones CDMA and GSM. we also talked about the project for our

class. we learned about unlocked and locked phones. talked about

Wireless Infastructure, also National Broad band was a topic we

covered.
* your social media experiences
I worked alot with twitter and I tried to play with more

google reader features such as adding alot of rss feeds so I could

become more informed about the various topics
* your experiences with IT infrastructure products & services
this week I worked on more VMWare virtulization and learend

alot about how to set up databses with SQL and I also played again

with VOIP asterix box. I attempted to learn about LDAP and Active

Directory AD. I know a little about them but not enough to make me

as employable as I hoped.
I continuede to look into an Android from verison but I am

still unsure if it would be worth getting at this stage in its

development.
* your progress on your course project
This week I thought about various topics and technologies

such as fiber, and wifi in the USA and in other countries.
